DESIGN IS IN THE DETAILS: HOW TO DESIGN YOUR LIVING ROOM WITH COLOR

Are you wanting to design a fun living room or family with some fun color, but you’re not sure where to start?  Today’s post features a wonderful vignette from a showroom at the World Trade Center called J Mackie.  And, one thing they’re known for is color, color and more color.

Take a look at this space below:

HOW TO DESIGN YOUR LIVING ROOM WITH COLOR

Notice all the details here.

The sofa is neutral in color, but when you look at this room all you see is color.  Always a good idea to keep the major upholstery piece a neutral color for longevity and balance.

The blue wall makes a huge statement serving as a wonderful backdrop for the neutral sofa and the artwork.  You don’t have to paint the entire room blue either.  You can make a statement with an accent wall like this one.

The pillows bring in the color to coordinate with the rest of the space.

Adding two different patterns creates interest and adds color and texture to the space.

Bringing in color and pattern in some or even all of the chairs is a great way to liven up the space.  Depending on how many chairs fit your space you could do a couple of neutral chairs with some colorful pillows and add a couple of chairs in a fun fabric like this fun chinoiserie pattern.

HOW TO DESIGN YOUR LIVING ROOM

Whether you are more traditional in taste or lean toward transitional think about adding some fun to the space by bringing in some contemporary art.  It tends to lighten and brighten and bring a new fresh personality to the space.  It can really enhance an otherwise traditional setting.

In this particular vignette they’ve added a randomly shaped rug in pink.  This really pops and makes it even more of a “happy space”.  If pink is too much for you of course you could pull in any of the colors you see in the artwork or the fabric.  Blue, red, green….whatever your preference might be.  Once you select your fabric or your focal art piece just pull the colors from either of those pieces.  Let that be your starting point for adding the color to your space.

Be sure to balance out the color with “non-color”, too.  Like this brass and glass coffee table and these simple clean accessories.

Bringing in color is fun, but there needs to be balance and place for the eye to rest.  Otherwise it’s overload to the senses.  So remember to anchor the space with some neutral color and simple lines and then have fun carefully bringing in color for that “wow”.

Happy Decorating!
