If you’re like me and just want to come up with some fun creative ways to wrap gifts for your family and friends – in a budget friendly way – I’ve got you covered. You can create fun elements to your packaging using items from around your home: old ornaments, discarded greenery, etc. Those kinds of things and also inexpensive items from the Dollar Tree and other stores.
And, it’s fun to see what kind of creations you can put together.
Some Basic Supplies You’ll Need:
- Hot Glue Gun
- Several Different Coordinating Holiday Paper Patterns
- Several Different Ribbon Styles and Patterns
- A Variety of Accessories: Greenery, Ornaments, Wooden Cutouts, Small Stockings, Etc.
Since I usually let the theme of my tree each year determine the theme of my packaging….this year I went with tan, red and white as my color scheme. And the red and white stripes you see in this ribbon here on my tree was part of my inspo as well.
I’m always on the look out for inexpensive ribbon and I tend to have a little stock pile of it in my craft closet. But, this year when I stumbled onto a sale at Joanne’s that was a buy one get three free I was all over it! So I was able to get four rolls to add to my stash for the price of one! Gotta love that! The bottom two rolls you see here were from Joann’s Fabrics, the other two were from Big Lots. The striped paper and the Santa paper was from Big Lots and the tan paper was, once again, from Joann’s – buy one, get three free.
Here are some other items I used to get creative and come up with some fun holiday packages:
Dollar Tree is a great store to purchase ornaments, small stockings like these and other unexpected things to use for your holiday packaging.
How excited would your little ones be with a little extra something tucked in their package wrapping like this Twix bar.
I always pull out whatever ribbon I have in my stash to see if I can use it. This year my burlap ribbon came in very handy.
These Dollar Tree cut outs come in packages of 6 or 8 and make great name tags for your gifts. Or even just for a little extra embelleshment. You can leave them alone or stain them like I did some of them above.
If you have other leftover cutouts like these hearts from Valentines Day last year that I got from the Dollar Tree – you can also use them for creative name tags or embelleshments as well.
And, be sure and save your leftover greenery! It comes in so handy for dressing up your packages for the holidays. I had some I was able to use and add that extra Christmas touch to so many of my gifts.
Here’s just one of the fun ornaments that Dollar Tree has to offer that can be used on your holiday gifts. Isn’t this fun?
These are just a few of the items I began to collect to come up with some creative looks for my Christmas packages this year. After I gathered together the basic items I would be using I sat down at my craft table and began playing around with designs and having fun putting together a multitude of different looks. Looks that would all work well together and coordinate with one another.
I created an easy bow by tying twine around a series of loops and adhered it to the package with hot glue.
Here I hot glued on my ribbon flat around the package, then created a bow and hot glued it on. Next I clipped greenery from my leftover garland and glued it inside the ribbon and then glued on my snowman cut out.
For this fun look I added the ribbon flat all the way around the package, then hot glued on this stocking with greenery and a metal tag.
I paired this stuffed stocking with one of the Santa cutouts that I stained, some wide ribbon from last year’s stash and of course some greenery. Gives it a fun character and personality.
Here I used this cute little ornament from the Dollar Tree that was $1.25. It adds such a fun, unexpected Christmas touch and of course can be kept by the recipient for their tree next year. A little gift that keeps on giving.
Here’s the iceskate with a different ribbon for a totally different look. There are just so many fun combinations once you have a collection of ribbon, ormaments, cutouts, unique tags, etc. Just sit and play around with them all until you find some fun designs you like.
For a simpler, more basic look, here’s one that still has some unique character and personality. Wrap a burlap ribbon around the package and hot glue on one of the stained Santa cutouts. That’s it. Understated, but still fun and has personalized character.
Check out these combinations below:
I think it’s so much fun to come up with unique and interesting packages for my family and friends. And, of course it just adds to the look of your Christmas tree with your packages adorned with that extra Christmas touch. Family and friends notice the extra effort and I think they enjoy it, too.
If you’re still wondering how to wrap your gifts this year I hope you keep this approach in mind. And, let me know if you do!
Happy Decorating, Happy Wrapping and Happy Christmas!

Sheri I absolutely love these! My favorite are the vintage skates. I can only imagine how much fun it would be for a child or adult to receive a present and then see the cute little vintage skate that they can keep or the stocking packed with goodies! What a beautiful added touch!

Sheri – I’m so impressed that you coordinate with your tree. Must be why you and Kristy are friends! I have seen some of those at the Dollar Tree but they look like Nordstroms on your packages. So pretty.
